The University of Delaware's Vocal Point was founded in 1998, and this mixed group has just funded a Kickstarter campaign to record and release its first album. Wrecking Ball also seems to be the group's first release (digital or otherwise). It's a crisp, clear start: the recording sounds great, and the soloist holds attention (certainly better than Miley Cyrus, not that it's a competition!).

The issue comes from the arrangement. The verses are solid — particularly the opening into the first verse. But the choruses all feel really slow, even though the tempo doesn't actually seem to change at all; the long, extended chords really drag down the song's energy. Oddly, this recording doesn't always feel like that of a mixed group, because there's not enough low end to balance out all of the female voices. It's not clear if the group is unbalanced or if that's just a decision of the arrangement/recording, but Vocal Point could have made more use of its male voices here.

This arrangement and performance certainly start out strongly, but Vocal Point will need to work harder in the future to deliver recordings that hold attention over time.
