Stephen Lanza

Stephen Lanza's RARB Bio

Until arriving at college, Stephen had virtually no involvement in a cappella music. His entire exposure consisted of a live recording of a group by the name of Inpulse. From that album, he learned vocal percussion by ear, more as a side hobby to oppose instrumental music.

After arriving at the University of Missouri, he joined the school's Men's group, Add9, in January of 2011. From there, he first truly discovered what would then be his obsession that is a cappella music. While being the group's designated vocal percussionist and enhancing his craft, he quickly became a sort of on-campus a cappella guru, learning virtually everything he could about it at a rapid pace. By time he graduated in May of 2015, he became known as a walking encyclopedia, often able to produce obscure, yet usually pertinent a cappella facts at the drop of a hat. Through the encouragement of a friend, he began a blog (AcaholicsAnonymous) that is devoted to the subject. He became president of Add9 in his final year with the group.

In his time at the University of Missouri, he also joined Hitt Street Harmony, the contemporary vocal group through the University's school of music. He is also an honorary member of the Naturelles, the women's a cappella group on campus, and has secured his spot as their #1 fan. He also had the honor of performing as a guest vocal percussionist alongside Sing-Off competitors Groove For Thought at their exhibition performance at VoCalNation in Philadelphia in the summer of 2013.

Now a graduate of Add9 and the University of Missouri, Stephen currently lives in the Milwaukee area and works as an industrial engineer. His current music projects are singing in the Chant Claire Chamber Choir and acting as a guest director for Focus, an extracurricular a cappella group at Port Washington High School. He is continuing to spread his love and knowledge of the a cappella world and can't wait to share it with RARB.
